Dubai Unveils First Sports and Entertainment Free Zone
The Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) has announced the establishment of the first of its kind sports and entertainment free zone in the emirate. The free zone will be the UAE’s first international free zone dedicated to sports and entertainment and will act as a business hub for the industry, enabling individuals and entities to acquire licenses for various sports and entertainment-related activities.
In a statement issued by WAM, the new sports and entertainment free zone in Dubai will aim to create a collaborative ecosystem that fosters the UAE’s aim to become a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and accelerates the growth of the sports and entertainment industry in the UAE. Furthermore, the free zone will enable individuals to obtain business licenses in various fields, including sports management and marketing, event organization, talent representation, and media and broadcasting. The new free zone will also support emerging sectors like AI-powered sports technology, e-sports, and fan token initiatives.
The announcement of the sports and entertainment-free zone will provide a strategic platform to industry stakeholders. This includes global brands, sports leagues and franchises, investors, talent agencies, artists, media figures, social media influencers, and creative industry professionals.
Global Opportunities for Sports and Entertainment Businesses
Dubai’s ambition to become a premier sports hub is driven by strong government support, as it has introduced various initiatives to promote sports at both grassroots and elite levels. Dubai is committed to providing state-of-the-art infrastructure and world-class facilities for athletes and enthusiasts. The aim is to position Dubai as a global sports destination, attracting major events and boosting tourism.
In particular, the Dubai Sports Council plays a major role in hosting international sporting events. This, in turn, stimulates economic growth and draws global attention. In addition, the Dubai government actively collaborates with private sector entities to encourage investment in sports academies, training centers, and event management companies.
Dubai Sports Industry’s Growing Contribution to GDP
According to the Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai sports industry contributed Dh 9 billion (US$2.5 billion) in 2023-24, accounting for 2.3% of Dubai’s GDP. The Dubai sports industry is likely to grow further due to the establishment of the sports free zone, investment and infrastructure initiatives, as well as the Economic Agenda D33 and golden residency permits.
