The UAE economy in 2026 continues to expand, with real GDP growing by 3% in Q1 2026 to AED 485 billion, compared with AED 470.9 billion in Q1 2025. The figures, published by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), also show that real non-oil GDP grew by 4.8%, increasing the non-oil economy’s contribution to total GDP to 79.4%.
The composition of this growth is particularly relevant when assessing UAE market opportunities. Several non-oil sectors recorded significant expansion during the quarter, including finance and insurance, construction, healthcare, and information and communication.
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technology
The information and communication sector grew by 5.9% in Q1 2026. While the GDP statistics do not isolate artificial intelligence as a separate economic activity, the growth of the broader information and communication sector provides an indication of the expansion of the UAE’s digital economy.
AI is also becoming an increasingly important area of government and private-sector investment. The commercial opportunity therefore extends beyond AI developers to companies providing automation, data analytics, enterprise software, cybersecurity and industry-specific AI applications.
For companies assessing this market, the key question is not simply the size of the technology sector, but which applications are generating sufficient demand among UAE businesses and consumers.
Trade and Logistics
Trade is one of the largest components of the UAE’s non-oil economy. Wholesale and retail trade accounted for 12.7% of UAE GDP in 2024, according to FCSC data, making it one of the country’s largest individual economic activities. The sector grew by 2.6% in Q1 2026.
The wider trade picture is even more significant. UAE non-oil foreign trade approached AED 2 trillion in the first half of 2026, reaching approximately AED 1.94 trillion, an increase of 13.1% year-on-year. Non-oil exports increased by 23.9% to AED 452.8 billion.
These figures reinforce the scale of the UAE’s role as a trading and distribution hub. The opportunity extends across logistics, warehousing, freight, fulfilment, supply-chain technology, e-commerce infrastructure and B2B distribution.
Healthcare and Wellness
Healthcare was among the faster-growing sectors in Q1 2026. Human health and social work activities grew by 7.7% during the quarter.
The sector also represents a meaningful area of public expenditure. The UAE federal budget allocated AED 5 billion to healthcare in 2024, while AED 5.745 billion was allocated to healthcare and community prevention services within the 2025 federal budget’s social development and pensions sector.
The opportunity is broader than conventional healthcare provision. Digital health, diagnostics, medical technology, preventive healthcare, wellness and fitness are increasingly relevant areas within the wider healthcare ecosystem.
What UAE Economic Growth Means for Market Entry
The latest economic data provides a positive backdrop for UAE market opportunities. However, overall GDP growth does not by itself establish the commercial potential of a specific product, service or industry. The relevant questions include market size and growth, customer segments, competitive intensity, pricing, distribution channels, regulatory requirements and potential barriers to entry.
This is where market research companies in the UAE can help businesses move from a positive macroeconomic outlook to a more specific assessment of market potential. For businesses assessing the UAE, a focused market assessment can also help determine whether the opportunity lies primarily in the domestic market, regional distribution and re-export, or a combination of both.
